Aaron O’Rourke

We're proud to announce Aaron O’Rourke, of Tallahassee, just won the title of National Mountain Dulcimer Champion at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas.  O’Rourke commented , “I know I wouldn’t have gotten there if I hadn’t gone to the Stephen Foster Dulcimer Retreat when I first started playing. That event exposed me to different dulcimer players and their unique styles of playing, and really got my wheels turning.”

Aaron is one of the younger instructors on the dulcimer circuit but makes up for his brief stay on the planet with a passionate investment in his playing. His exploration of music began with the bass in a high school punk rock band but soon switched to the mountain dulcimer. He has studied with a wide range of dulcimer masters, has won numerous instrumental competitions and brings a unique flare to his arrangements. He already has two great CDs to his credit, one solo and another with his trio.  We know you’ll be seeing a lot of Aaron in the coming years, and we’re thrilled to have him with us again.

Below are descriptions of some of the classes that will be offered over the weekend

Stephen Seifert -

Learn Like Grandpa Did - Players of all levels need to and can do this. The content and tempos are especially for Experienced Beginners and Intermediates.
Learn in a do-as-you-see-me-do style that's very similar to what a lot of folks did in the old days. Basically, I'll teach you a bunch of tricks for reading peoples' hands instead of reading TAB. Ears are helpful for this but not required. You'll be using your eyes more than anything. We will cover three to five tunes, TAB included. You will leave with these tunes in your head and under your fingers. If you've had trouble in jams, this class will help.

Group Playing Techniques - Focus is on Intermediates but all are welcome.
Don't just play the same thing over and over. Your audience craves variety and unpredictability even if in simple ways. Using familiar tunes, we will cover a number of techniques that enable players of any level to make beautiful, rich, and interesting music as an ensemble. (duets, trios, etc.) Topics will include, Tips for Faster Tempos, Easy Harmonies, Playing Backup, Developing a Bare Bones Version as a Foundation, Integrating All Levels, Making the Right Hand Interesting, Playing in Three Octaves, For More Advanced Players: How to Build Elaborately on the Bare Bones Foundation (If you're covering all the possibilities, you'll never get bored.)

Introduction to Chord Melody Style - Intermediate and Up
Begin the process of being able to put a chord with any melody note. We'll start with one song that will GREATLY simplify your ability to play chord-melody style on all future songs. Scared of a bunch of numbers? I'll show you the way around all that. I won't be talking theory. These specific techniques will make sense and you'll be able to use them before you leave the class.

BluegrassTunes in A - DAD - Capo 4 - Upper Intermediate to Advanced
Having both the 6 and the 6-and-a-half frets makes this capo position extremely versatile for the sophisticated sounds of Bluegrass and the Blues. We'll cover Black Mountain Rag and Maiden's Prayer. Included will be a bunch of tips on fingering and right-hand work.

Three-Hour Master Class - $40 - For Upper Level Players (All are Welcome) - Sunday Morning, 9 to Noon
I want to show you exactly how to create Intros, riffs, and endings to make your performances and arrangements unique. These techniques are specific and very effective for slow and fast tunes. Using right-hand rhythm exercises and left-hand chord shape arpeggios, I'll show you how to simplify or fancify single measures or entire tunes. I spent my early years trying to figure out how better players did this. I've now figured it out and it's a lot easier than you can imagine. Prepare to surprise yourself.

Bing Futch -

How One Little Fret Will Change Your Life -
More and more players are adding the 1+ and 8+ frets to their dulcimers and loving it. In this workshop, I'll show you how these frets can be useful for not only playing tunes, but also understanding the basics of music theory. If you don't have a 1+ fret on your dulcimer, we'll help you put a temporary one in using our materials.   Intermediate.

Exploring An Aeolian World -
We'll get warm and cuddly with the dark and mysterious Aeolian mode, both by tuning (DAC) and via capo (1st fret.) We'll learn scales, chords and popular traditional tunes written in this mode, including "Shady Grove", "Road To Lisdoonvarna" and "Cluck Old Hen."     Intermediate.

Have Mountain Dulcimer, Will Perform! -
Playing your mountain dulcimer is one thing; playing and singing is quite another. Add to that a set-list designed to entertain, stage business and poise, mindful dynamics and an unpredictable audience. This workshop is designed to get you thinking beyond simply singing with the mountain dulcimer with an eye towards presenting it in a live setting.        Intermediate to Advanced.

Three Irish Ballads - Learn three lovely Irish ballads while incorporating playing techniques such as slides, turnarounds, hammer-ons, pull-offs and vibrato to add expression! 90 minute workshop with an endless repertoire of tunes. Intermediate

In this class, become the conductor of the music you play on your autoharp, using all your strings, layering sounds, accessing dynamic range, discovering how to sustain sounds or damp them at will. You will pick up many simple ways to effectively give any tune a facelift. In class, we will play one tune together to master the basic concepts (this will be taught in “Learn a Tune in a Flash” during the Retreat), then individual participants will have the opportunity to play a tune for the class and receive guidance on how to “break it open” with the new skills taught.
