Jon Kay's
 "boat-cimer"
When Jon Kay was leaving his beloved friends in Florida to take a job in Indiana I got commissioned to build him a dulcimer as a farewell present.
P1010121.jpg (20139 bytes) It was to be a surprise so I used our frequent casual conversations about our personal "fantasy dulcimer" to get an idea of what Jon might enjoy in this instrument.

Here is the case that all his buddies signed, like a big permanent going away card.

P1010122.jpg (21680 bytes) The instrument is mahagony body
cedar top
mahogany finger  board with rosewood fret board
P1010123.jpg (18697 bytes) An engraving in the strum area has a "crying heart" and reads "From your Florida Friends"
P1010124.jpg (20831 bytes) This shows the stylized rosettes and the scalloped fret board. You only feel strings when playing and you can bend a note by pressing harder - they require a very subtle tough. Jon's the only one I know who can make them work...;~)
P1010125.jpg (13982 bytes) Mini - Grover tuners, zero fret and Delrin nut/string spacer.
P1010126.jpg (16474 bytes) The cross sectional shape is sort of half an octagon only squashed - meaning the back panel is wider.
P1010127.jpg (16436 bytes) P1010128.jpg (13884 bytes)
P1010130.jpg (18756 bytes) The finger board "floats" meaning it touches down only under the bridge and at the nut area. It is also undercut at the tail piece to give more bass response.
P1010131.jpg (18811 bytes) There is a rosewood end cap to the tail piece with string slots for ball end strings.
P1010132.jpg (16891 bytes) The balls and windings stay out of the way and there is  no "threading the needle" when changing strings.
P1010134.jpg (29646 bytes) P1010135.jpg (31892 bytes)
It has a "Pick Up The World" pick up, and a cord jack in the strap pin. P1010136.jpg (20157 bytes)
